Lawyers or attorneys generally spend a lot of time for preparing the client’s case and dealing with other lawyers that it becomes difficult to build a good relation with their own clients. Here are some tips to build client relationships for lawyers.
Understand that your client is under a lot of stress because of the case and needs someone to listen to their issues. Like getting fired from a job, getting into a fight with a roommate, breaking their leg, arm, foot neck; losing electricity in their house due to failure of paying the light bill, losing their cell phone, getting divorced are some of the common problems that arises in such times. In such situations, it is important for the lawyer or attorney to have an empathetic attitude towards the client so that he or she can manage these extra problems tactfully.
You can encourage the client to journal their feelings and write the stories of their life. They will certainly feel better and get a good opportunity to express themselves and their life as it is. You can give the client to write the story when you are away from the office to collect facts and information related to the case. In free time, you can go through the journal and learn more about your client. That way your time and energy along with the client’s will be utilized productively. You can also learn many facts about the client’s life that can work in favour for his case.
If you meet your client during the court hearings, make sure you inform him that you will get together again. Clients feel happy to meet their lawyers if the meeting plan is scheduled in advance. The client will also look forward to the meetings to help you with the case history and build that connection of honesty and trust. Also, if you ensure that the client gets a copy of everything you discuss and research related to the case, he will be more than elated. In criminal cases, as an attorney you should ensure that the client goes to see the pre-sentence officer along with you. Because clients are not aware how to act and behave or say and most of the times give incomplete or wrong information in the absence of an attorney. Hence, it is recommended that you accompany the client when they go to see the probation officer or pre-sentence officer.
Do not tell your client to meet you in court on the correct time. Always tell them to be present in the court an hour in advance because if they become late, they can still show up on time. Also, you should brief them about the location of the court. Not every client knows the location and can calculate how much time it takes to reach the court.
